Renting Clothes on a Budget: Your Go-To Guide

One of the biggest complaints about slow fashion brands is that the clothing options are too pricey and, as a result, inaccessible. This makes renting clothes a great way to sustainably experience new styles while on a budget.

Fashion does not have to follow the linear cycle of buy, wear, trash, and repeat. Consider trying these four clothing rental companies to embrace slow fashion. You can play around with new, rented pieces without worrying about the price or commitment.

1. Rent the Runway

This platform allows members to rent clothing for all different types of events. For a fraction of the cost, you can temporarily try different brands and styles. Rent the Runway also offers luxury items that are often too expensive to be purchased at full cost. Memberships start at $69 a month, with a limit of four designer items per month. If you pay $99 a month, however, it's a limit of eight designer items.

2. Switch

Switch specializes in designer jewelry rentals. Members can rent jewelry from brands like Chanel, Hermes, Gucci, and so much more. Authenticity is always guaranteed. Whenever you are done with a piece of jewelry, just send it back and you will get a new one. It is that simple!

There are two membership options: the Gold plan is $45 a month, which allows one piece of jewelry to be rented at a time. The second option is the Black plan, which is $95 a month, and allows three pieces of jewelry to be rented at the same time.

3. Tulerie

Tulerie describes itself as a “peer-to-peer luxury closet sharing app with sustainability and sharing on the mind.” This app only accepts members after a ten minute interview. Potential new members are made to understand the concept and values of the brand.

Renting through Tulerie allows you to look through online closets and then make a request for an item. From there, the request is approved within 24 hours and then shipped by the lender. Tulerie now offers brands like Christian Dior, Gucci, and Bottega Veneta.

4. Nuuly

If you are looking to rent clothing for everyday use, then Nuuly is perfect for you. Instead of wasting paycheck after paycheck at Urban Outfitters, rent clothing from your favorite brands. For $88 a month, you can rent up to six pieces of clothing! If you fall in love with the clothes and don’t want to return them, you can buy them straight from Nuuly.

Trends and styles will always come and go. Renting options will allow you to keep up with them. Let us know if you’ve ever rented clothes, and what your experience was like!
